EHV-1 Update

Earlier this month, a gelding was diagnosed with Equine Herpesvirus 1 Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), despite no history of travel outside of Alberta or Canada, and annual vaccinations. As required by the Reportable and Notifiable Disease Regulation, this singular case was reported to the Office of the Chief Provincial Vet (OFPV). The gelding has seen an improvement in his condition since being treated at an equine hospital, however, is still showing mild neurological signs.

While this case has shown that vaccination has provided some level of protection, strict biosecurity measures should be used to prevent the introduction and spread of Equine Herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1). 

There have been no restrictions or quarantines placed; however, some organizations may choose to cancel events to help minimize the risk. Please reach out to your event organizers to check the status of the event, the risk associated, and the biosecurity measures required.
